Frusemide (also spelled Furosemide) is a loop diuretic (“water pill”).
It helps the body remove excess water and salt.

Frusemide 40 mg is commonly used to treat:

• Edema (swelling) due to

  • Heart failure

  • Liver disease

  • Kidney disease

• High blood pressure (hypertension)

• Pulmonary edema (fluid in lungs) in emergencies

• To increase urine output in some medical conditions

• It works on the loop of Henle in the kidney.

• Makes the kidneys remove more salt (NaCl) and water.

• This reduces swelling and lowers blood pressure.

• Usual adult dose: 20–40 mg once daily, sometimes twice daily.

• For severe edema: dose can be increased gradually.

• Take in the morning to avoid nighttime urination.

Varies by brand, but often includes:

• Lactose monohydrate

• Corn starch / Pregelatinized starch

• Talc

• Sodium starch glycolate

• Magnesium stearate

• Povidone

• Colloidal silicon dioxide

• Coloring agents (optional)

Common:

• Frequent urination

• Dizziness

• Low potassium (hypokalemia)

• Dehydration

• Low blood pressure

• Muscle cramps

Serious (needs medical attention):

• Severe electrolyte imbalance

• Hearing changes (very high doses or injections)

• Kidney function changes

• May cause potassium loss → doctor may prescribe potassium supplements.

• Avoid with NSAIDs (can reduce effect).

• Use cautiously in kidney disease, liver disease, diabetes.

• Alcohol increases dizziness.

• Pregnant/breastfeeding women should use only under medical advice.
