Usage (Humans & Veterinary):

Praziquantel is an anthelmintic (anti-worm medicine) used mainly for treating tapeworms and flukes.
600 mg is the standard adult strength.

Praziquantel 600 mg is used for:

• Taeniasis

• Hymenolepiasis (dwarf tapeworm)

• Diphyllobothriasis (fish tapeworm)

• Schistosomiasis (blood flukes)

• Clonorchiasis (liver fluke)

• Paragonimiasis (lung fluke)

• Fasciolopsiasis (intestinal fluke)

(Usually used with steroids + anti-seizure meds)

Praziquantel:

• Paralyses the worms

• Causes them to detach

• They are then destroyed by the body

Works against flatworms (platyhelminths).

Adults:

• Usually 20–40 mg per kg, divided into 1–3 doses in one day

• For tapeworm → often single-day therapy

• For flukes → may need divided doses

Children: dose depends on weight.

• Nausea

• Abdominal pain

• Fatigue

• Dizziness

• Mild fever

• Headache

• Severe allergy

• Heart rhythm changes

• Neurological symptoms (more common in neurocysticercosis)

• Avoid driving (causes dizziness).

• Caution in liver disease.

• Not recommended in the 1st trimester of pregnancy.

• Dose adjustment for children & elderly.
